I get asked about the best colour for dance dresses a lot. And whilst I often start with something along the lines of, “whatever you feel most comfortable in…”, there is definitely more than one factor at play when considering colour. It’s true that dancers must feel comfortable in their dresses but most importantly, they must feel confident. I always ask my clients to think about the colours that make them feel confident. For some, dark colours (with their elegance and slimming effect) create a sense of confidence whereas for others, confidence comes from wearing their favourite shade of blue. It can be a very personal choice or it could be a decision based on going against current trends in order to stand out.
I regularly attend dance competitions up and down the country and when I am not dancing with a competitor, I spend a lot of time taking notes on the dress styles and colours around me. I also enjoy working out what colours are the rarest and which ones really stand out on any given day and why. It’s a fascinating activity and it informs my designs enormously.
During fitting appointments at my boutique, I always get my clients to talk about colour and to challenge themselves by trying something in a colour that they wouldn’t ordinarily gravitate to. It’s a strategy that seems to work and clients are often excited to find that, by following my advice and trying a ‘wild card’, they move away from “safe” choices and start considering dress colours that really suit their hair colour or skin tone or that really stand out on the dancefloor. Any current Obsession design can be remade in a range of beautiful colours so clients can really pick their favourite dress AND their favourite colour to create that perfect dress.
All my Obsession dancewear dresses are designed to be eye-catching so whether you choose to be demure in a black Ballroom gown embellished with ostrich feathers or loud in a fluorescent coral Latin two-piece, you are sure to get noticed.
